No not one.

Holy Lord, I have sinned times without number, and been guilty of pride and unbelief, of failure to find Thy mind in Thy Word, of neglect to seek Thee in my daily life. My transgressions and short-comings present me with a list of accusations, but I bless Thee that they will not stand against me, for all have been laid on Christ. Go on to subdue my corruptions, and grant me grace to live above them. Let not the passions of the flesh, nor the lustings of the mind bring my spirit into subjection, but do Thou rule over me in liberty and power.

I thank Thee that many of my prayers have been refused. I have asked amiss and do not have, I have prayed from lusts and been rejected, I have longed for Egypt and been given a wilderness. Go on with Thy patient work, answering ‘no’ to my wrongful prayers, and fitting me to accept it. Purge me from every false desire, every base aspiration, everything contrary to Thy rule. I thank Thee for Thy wisdom and Thy love, for all the acts of disciple to which I am subject, for sometimes putting me into the furnace to refine my gold and remove my dross.

No trial is so hard to bear as a sense of sin. If Thou shouldst give me choice to live in pleasure and keep my sins, or to have them burnt away with trial, give me sanctified affliction. Deliver me from every evil habit, every accretion of former sins, everything that dims the brightness of Thy grace in me, everything that prevents me taking delight in Thee. Then I shall bless Thee, God of jeshurun, for helping me to be upright.

Now, listen to me. This might set some of you free.

Do you ever get up in the morning, and you have your quiet time, and feel the presence of God, and you’re studying the Word, and God seems to speak to you, and you go out and you witness to everybody, and you’re obedient, and, boy, you just did it right that day. I mean, you were just on top of the world. You loved your wife, you didn’t kick the cat, you’re just—you’re walking with God. And you’re so full of joy at the end of the day.

And the next day you get up; well, you overslept, you shouldn’t have watched that program the night before, you should’ve been in the word, you didn’t witness when you had an opportunity, and there’s a real sense in which you’re filled with sorrow.

Do you know what that is? Idolatry. You have become the source of your own joy. Your joy comes from you and your continuous work. My joy comes from the finished work of Jesus Christ.

The Christian lives in a constant state of conviction that this flesh is not their master and this world is not their home.

Prayer will become effective when we stop using it as a substitute for obedience.

Expect little from self, but much from Christ. Look more to Jesus, and less to self.

He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High will abide in the shadow of the Almighty. I will say to the LORD, “My refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust.
